About

Five stories a day. Five minutes flat. Then we let you go.

nwsly is a daily news app built on a single product constraint: five stories per day — three national, one local, one state — each AI-analyzed across multiple sources and human-checked. Five minutes, five stories, then the app gets out of your way.

Why nwsly exists

News consumption is broken in two directions: infinite scrolls and walls of text. The first hijacks your morning; the second is the same news four ways. We don't think you need either. We think you need five stories, well-analyzed, that you can read in the time it takes coffee to cool.

The 5-minute promise is inviolable. The free tier IS the product. nwsly+ ($100/yr) is for news junkies who want source bias ratings and more cards in the same 80–120 word format — never a different format, never hidden depth. It's the Duolingo model: the free tier is excellent and self-contained.

How nwsly is different

Five fits in working memory. Five stories, hard cap. David Allen's rule — five items is the most you can keep in your head at once. Past five, you stop catching up and start scrolling.

National, local, state. Three national stories cover what everyone else is talking about. One local story covers your city. One state story covers your statehouse. That's the picture of the day for almost everyone.

Tuned to you — but never a bubble. Your five start balanced — one national story from the left, one from the center, one from the right. From there the deck follows what you actually read: the topics and perspectives you keep coming back to. We don't force the other side on you — but we never wall it off either. At least one of your three national stories always comes from outside your lean. And the one line we won't cross is factuality: we tailor which viewpoints you see, never the sources we rate unreliable.

No ads, ever. The recommendation model runs on your phone where it can. We collect what's needed to pick tomorrow's five, and that's the line.

Kevin Veitia previously led marketing at Ground News. nwsly is a different cut at the same problem — instead of comparing how outlets cover a story side-by-side, nwsly analyzes coverage across multiple sources into a single brief, with locality slots that ground the day in your city and state.

The technology

Briefs are written by Anthropic's Claude, analyzed across three to five underlying articles. Every brief is human-spot-checked before the 7am push. We will not ship an unchecked brief; that's a credibility floor, not a launch concession.

The mobile apps are native — SwiftUI on iOS, Jetpack Compose on Android. The backend is a FastAPI service on Fly.io that polls RSS feeds, clusters by event, and runs the daily synthesis. Editorial standards are public.
