Today's five.

Monday, September 7, 2026. 5 briefs — three national, one local, one state — analyzed from across the spectrum.

BRIEF

An Amazon cargo plane ran out of runway in Miami and took five lives with it

A Boeing 767 doesn't stop when it runs out of runway — it just keeps going, into traffic. The Amazon-branded cargo plane landed at Miami International just before 2pm Sunday, overran Runway 30, struck multiple vehicles, and came to rest in a field next to the airport trailing thick black smoke. Five people are dead. Five more are injured, three of them critically. Over 60 fire rescue units responded. The plane was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The NTSB will investigate. The Inquirer led with the smoke; everyone else led with the body count.

Germany's Far Right Just Had Its Best Night Ever, and Nobody Knows What to Do Next

The AfD won 44% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt — more than double the second-place party — and the question now isn't whether Germany has a problem, it's what everyone does about it. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU came in at 18.5%, which is the political equivalent of getting lapped. ABC led with the World War II framing; Bloomberg led with the blow to Merz. The AfD can't necessarily govern yet — it depends on which smaller parties clear the 5% threshold. But their candidate already declared history made, and on the numbers, he's not wrong.

Trump Has Discovered There Are More Words He Can Cross Out on a Map

Renaming a state is not actually something presidents can do, which makes Truth Social the perfect venue for the idea. Trump posted a map of New Mexico with "Mexico" crossed out and "America" written in — his second term has already delivered "Gulf of America" and a renewed push on Greenland, so the pattern is clear. None of the outlets covering this treated it as policy. All of them covered it anyway. The state of New Mexico, for its part, has been called that since 1912 and has survived considerable indignity since.

Raúl Castro shows up alive, which is apparently news enough

Showing up is the whole story when you're 95 and the rumors had already started. Raúl Castro appeared at a public event on September 5th, 2026, after reports circulated that his health had taken a serious turn. No statement. No speech. Just: present. NBC 6 South Florida reported the reappearance but the available details are thin — which is on-brand for a government that has treated transparency as an optional feature for about sixty years. Whether this was a genuine public appearance or a carefully staged one is, as always with Cuba, a question the photos can't answer.

Pinellas County Is Closing Schools, and the Map Tells the Story

When a school district starts talking about "consolidations," what they mean is: some neighborhoods are losing a school. Pinellas County leaders are set to announce a new round of closures and mergers Thursday — the kind of announcement that gets made on a weekday so the weekend can absorb the noise. Enrollment is falling, which is what happens when housing gets expensive and families quietly leave. The Tampa Bay Times has been tracking which schools are feeling the squeeze hardest. The closures haven't been named yet. They will be tomorrow.
