BRIEF

Indonesia's Flores region just reminded everyone it sits on one of the most dangerous fault lines on Earth

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Indonesia's Flores region at 6am on a Saturday, which is the worst possible time to also need to run uphill. At least 47 people are dead, dozens more injured, and buildings collapsed across a region that has been through this before and will go through it again. Authorities issued a tsunami warning, then lifted it after monitoring showed no significant sea-level threat — though some smaller tsunamis were reported. The quake struck at just 10 kilometers depth. It was followed by at least 235 aftershocks. The death toll is expected to rise.

The Midwest keeps getting rained on, and the rain isn't done yet

Indiana has now lost at least six people to flooding that refuses to stop, with more storms forecast through the weekend across already-saturated ground. The White River in Anderson crested at a record 24.9 feet. More than 150,000 lost power. Dozens have been displaced. NewsNation led with the death toll; NPR led with what's still coming. Governor Braun called Trump, who indicated a Presidential Emergency Declaration is on the way. Eleven inches of rainfall in a week will do that. The ground has stopped absorbing water, which means the next round of storms has nowhere to go.

Fauci's Fifth Amendment count hits triple digits and he still won't show up

Pleading the Fifth more than 100 times in one hearing and then declining the follow-up is a very specific kind of move. Fauci's attorney rejected a second Senate appearance request from Sen. Ron Johnson, calling it an attempt to "impermissibly harass or degrade" his client — which is the legal way of saying "we're done here." Only Fox News and the Post are covering this prominently, and both are running the same wire copy. Johnson's investigation covers both pandemic response and vaccine safety. Fauci has not made a public statement.

Five people shot outside a Virginia State dorm, and the suspect was hiding in a closet

A 19-year-old non-student found hiding in a campus dormitory closet is now facing eight felony warrants — which is not the back-to-school story Virginia State University was looking for. The shooting happened around 1:30am near the Quad Annexes, just as the academic year was getting underway. Five people were shot, ranging in age from 17 to 23; only one was a student. One person remains in critical condition. Police say multiple suspects were involved, and the investigation is ongoing. The Guardian led with suspects still at large; by Saturday afternoon, at least one was in a closet.
