America Turns 250 and Somehow There Are Two Competing Birthday Merch Operations
America's 250th birthday arrived with a $275 decorative throw pillow and a half-hour speech at Mount Rushmore, which covers the full range of how this country celebrates itself. Congress created one commemorative commission a decade ago; Trump stood up a separate LLC last year. Both are now selling merchandise, employing staff, and apparently not coordinating. New York hit 100 degrees with a heat index of 110. The Dispatch ran a piece about an immigrant family who spent the 1996 Olympics camping in a North Carolina state park. The country contains multitudes — and apparently two birthday merch operations charging different prices for the same flag.

Paul Pelosi, 86, hit a parked car in Wine Country and then just... left
Hitting something with your car and not being entirely sure what it was is a hard thing to say out loud, but that's what 86-year-old Paul Pelosi apparently told deputies after crashing his brown convertible into a parked vehicle in Yountville on Friday. A witness watched it happen, noted the direction he drove off, and helped deputies find him. No alcohol was involved. No one was hurt. The case now sits with the Napa County DA. A family spokesperson told Newsweek he's apologized to the other car's owner and will cover the damage. Nancy Pelosi, per the spokesperson, will not be commenting.
BRIEF
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got married inside a 19,500-seat arena and somehow made it feel like a backyard barbecue
Renting out Madison Square Garden for your wedding is one way to tell 1,000 of your closest friends that you value privacy. Swift and Kelce did exactly that on Friday, filling one of New York's loudest venues with high school friends, neighbors, and handwritten vows in little books — then apparently confiscated every guest's Instagram impulse. BBC led with the celebrity sightings outside. GMA anchors, who attended, led with how intimate it felt. No official photos from inside have been released. For a couple who met in public and dated in public, they figured out the private part right at the end.

America Turned 250 in 100-Degree Heat While the President Gave a Speech About America
Thunderstorms evacuated the National Mall for two hours, a heat dome made Washington one of the hottest places on Earth, and Trump still gave his speech — which is either determination or the most American thing that has ever happened. The address mixed genuine ceremony (WWII veterans, flags from Lincoln's casket and the Wright Brothers' plane) with the partisan detours NBC led with and The Hill logged mostly as weather logistics. NewsNation, meanwhile, noted fireworks sales may break records set in 2022. Two hundred and fifty years in, the country celebrated the way it does everything: loudly, expensively, and slightly behind schedule.
BRIEF
America Turns 250 and the Gift Is Free Park Admission
Celebrating a country's 250th birthday by giving away access to its best public land is either deeply wholesome or the most American compromise imaginable — probably both. Florida is marking the semiquincentennial by opening state parks free of charge, letting people actually visit the places their tax dollars maintain. It's the kind of policy that's hard to argue with and easy to ignore until you're already planning a road trip. No ribbon-cutting required. No cable news segment needed. Just go outside. The parks will be there.
