Britain's Seventh Prime Minister in Ten Years Will Be a Labour Leader Nobody Elected

Keir Starmer lasted less than two years in Downing Street, which puts him firmly in the tradition of recent British prime ministers. He resigned Monday after losing Wales, posting Labour's worst Scottish results on record, and shedding over 1,200 seats in England's local elections — at which point 100-plus members of his own party started doing the math out loud. Starmer stays as caretaker until September. The leadership race opens July 9. Axios noted Britain is simultaneously managing an economic crisis tied to the war in Iran. Reason's headline was "His Replacement Will Likely Be More of the Same." Tough but hard to argue with.

Miami finally got their superstar, and it only cost them basically their entire future

Two rebuilding franchises just gambled on each other, which is a strange thing to call one of the biggest trades in NBA history. The Heat land Giannis Antetokounmpo — two-time MVP, 10-time All-Star, one championship — in exchange for Tyler Herro, three other players, and a draft pick haul that stretches into 2033. Milwaukee chose Miami over Boston because the offer had more young talent and assets, per ESPN. Giannis is 31, played only 36 games last season, and the Bucks finished 32-50. The Heat haven't been to the Finals since 2023. Both teams are betting the other guy blinks first.

America Already Does the Thing Everyone Is Demanding America Do

The richest Americans already pay a larger share of taxes than wealthy people do in most other developed countries, which has not made the phrase "pay their fair share" any less popular at campaign rallies. The U.S. tax code is more progressive than most — meaning it leans harder on high earners relative to everyone else — than comparable nations. That fact tends to get lost in the argument, partly because the argument isn't really about the data. The actual debate is about how much government costs and who defines "rich" when the bill comes due.

BRIEF

A jury acquitted George Pino in under two hours, which is a fast verdict for a charge carrying prison time.

Courtrooms rarely go quiet the way they did when George Pino heard "not guilty" — and then went loud again with gasps. The prominent Miami real estate broker had been charged with second-degree manslaughter and vessel homicide following a 2022 boat crash that killed Luciana Cristiana Fernandez. Prosecutors said he should be held responsible. The defense disagreed. The jury needed less than two hours to side with the defense. Pino was seen crying. Both NBC 6 and WSVN covered the verdict without much daylight between them — the facts here did the talking.
