Israel Expands Lebanon Assault With Iran-US Talks in Balance
Israel Raised a Flag on a 900-Year-Old Castle and Called It a Victory
A Crusader castle that Israel last occupied in 2000 now has an Israeli flag on it again, which is either a military objective or a very expensive photo op — experts quoted in The Guardian suggest the latter. Israel's push into Lebanon is now the deepest in 26 years. Bloomberg noted the expansion is happening while the US and Iran are actively trading draft messages on a broader diplomatic deal. Semafor pointed out that Iran has made a Lebanese ceasefire a precondition for any agreement with the US. The castle offers little tactical advantage against Hezbollah's drone-heavy strategy. But it photographs well.

Protests worked — or at least, that's what the timing suggests
After days of clashes, arrests, and a surprise curfew, family visitation at Newark's Delaney Hall ICE facility is back on — which is either a win for protesters or a scheduling coincidence, depending on who you ask. DHS agreed to restore visits following pressure from New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill. The curfew — 9pm to 6am nightly — stays in place, after the mayor cited weapons found among those arrested. NBC and MSNBC led with the visitation resuming; WSVN led with the curfew. The underlying allegations about detainee conditions that started all this haven't been resolved by any of it.

Maine's Sexting Senate Candidate Is Now Everyone's Problem
A Democratic Senate hopeful in Maine apparently found a creative way to make his own primary awkward for the entire party. Graham Platner — running to unseat Susan Collins — had his campaign confirm this weekend that his wife discovered explicit texts with multiple women on his phone last summer. When ABC asked Cory Booker directly whether Platner might sink Democratic chances in Maine, Booker said "yeah, I have concerns" and then immediately pivoted to talking about Donald Trump, which is the political equivalent of checking your phone during an uncomfortable conversation. Platner's wife posted a video saying the marriage is fine. The primary is June 9.

Hours of SWAT, a knife, bomb threats, and one outcome: Oakland Park standoff ends in death
A standoff that started with a knife ended with a SWAT team, which is how these things tend to escalate when someone mentions propane tanks and bombs. Kevin Dominick Almonte, 31, reportedly spent Friday evening threatening neighbors at an Oakland Park apartment complex before barricading himself inside a unit. Broward Sheriff's deputies said he claimed to have guns, propane tanks, and explosives inside. Hours of negotiation followed. Cellphone video captured the full tactical response — guns drawn, deputies stacked at the doorway. He was shot and killed. BSO says deputies tried to talk him out first.

Florida's new budget includes $725,000 for an anti-communism curriculum company connected to Mike Huckabee, which is a sentence that contains many choices
Florida finally has a budget, and buried inside it is $725,000 for an education company tied to Mike Huckabee — current U.S. ambassador to Israel, former governor, former presidential candidate, permanent Florida Man. The company produces anti-communism materials and a course called "The Kids' Guide to How the Bible Built America." Florida Phoenix flagged it; no other outlets in the mix picked it up. The budget got passed; this line item did not generate a press conference. Somewhere in the gap between those two facts is basically the entire story of how state budgets work.
